LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo – It’s not uncommon to see ants in the spring, but this spring you can plan on seeing more of them, a lot more!

Travis Cole with Cole Termite And Pest Control says most of his calls are from people complaining about ants.

Cole’s job is to get rid of the insects, but this year it’s proving to be an even bigger job than usual. Cole says the numbers tell the story, “25 to 30 percent worse this year, at least that’s what we’ve seen in our numbers the last 30 days with our phone calls and I expect that trend to last through most of the spring.”

So not only are the ants here, but it appears they are here to stay for a while.

But there are some things you can do on your own if you don’t want to hire an exterminator.

“Liquid baits are the best to use if they’re inside. I don’t suggest spraying,” Cole said. “That can tend to scatter the problem and increase it.” But Cole says make sure you use liquid bait, because solid baits will only kill part of ant colonies.

Cole says that’s because adult ants can’t eat solids.

Cole says prevention is the most important thing you can do.

“Preventative really is the key when you get to reacting to ants, especially that’s when you’ve already lost half the battle. They can be controlled, but sometimes it’s going to take three to six weeks once they’ve gotten inside to let the baits do their work. If you stay on a preventative program you never have the problem in the first place.”

Cole says ants aren’t the only insects we’ll see more of this spring. He says you can also count on more mosquitoes, spiders, termites and silverfish.
