Bed Bugs: A Traveler’s Worst Nightmare
When it comes to pests you don’t want to come into contact with, bed bugs are pretty close to the top of the list. Built into our brains since we were little with nursery rhymes warning us to “not let the bed bugs bite,” that’s still good advice no matter what age.
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are small, wingless insects, usually reddish-brown, that can grow up to 5 mm in length. They’re hard to spot if you’re not paying attention, but it’s important that you do especially when you travel. That’s because they feed on human blood. Bed bug bites leave itchy welts and can cause allergic reactions in some people.
How do I prevent catching bed bugs?
Bed bugs like to hide in dark places, so when you arrive in a hotel room, before you drag your luggage into the room, check the comforter, sheets, bed seams, pillows and even any draperies. If you spot any bed bugs, or signs of their presence like brown or black stains, clear eggs and nymphs or shed skins, leave the room immediately and call the manager.
How do I get rid of bed bugs?
If you do end up with bed bugs that you discover too late, thoroughly inspect your luggage for any traces of them before you bring them back into your home. Wash all your clothes whether they’re clean or not on the hottest setting your washer has, and then dry them for at least 30 minutes.
